Card is latest offering in exclusive agreement for GE Money and eBay

15 Jun 2007, Boston : GE Money, the consumer lending unit of General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), announced the eBayT MasterCard®, an expansion of its partnership with eBay. The card, announced at eBay Live! today, will be available to customers in late June.

eBay MasterCard customers will benefit from a new rewards program, earning one Reward Point for every $1 spent in purchases. Reward Points are also earned with non-Internet, everyday purchases wherever MasterCard is accepted. Points are redeemable for shipping discounts and vouchers that can be used to shop on eBay or to pay eBay seller fees.

Three mastiffs in Hesperia die from Africanized bee stings

May 15, 2007 - HESPERIA - Africanized honey bees killed three mastiffs by stinging them repeatedly. The dogs' owner was also stung while attempting to save the dogs. The Africanized bees, also known as "killer bees," are similar to the European honey bee in that they will not sting unless they are provoked, according to a press release from Hesperia. In this case, a falling tree branch disturbed the bee hive last Monday, said Tony Genovesi, Animal Control supervisor.

The owner of the mastiffs, which included a female, a male and a puppy, called Hesperia Animal Control but by the time an officer arrived, the owner had already gone outside and been stung as well. The dogs were large - the female was about 100 pounds, the male 90 pounds and the puppy weighed about 20 pounds, Genovesi said.

Bee stings have a similar affect on dogs and humans, Genovesi said, but unlike humans, dogs are often unable to run away because they are confined by fences or chains. In this case, the dogs were in a fenced backyard.

Bee samples sent to San Bernardino County Vector Control revealed that the bees were Africanized, according to the press release. Hesperia Animal Control has given the dogs' owner notice to remove the bee hive.

05/15/2007 - LIVINGSTON-It's been a great year for apple blossoms, according to Russell Bartolotta of Klein's Kill Fruit Farms. "It's probably the best bloom period I've seen since I've been on the farm," said Mr. Bartolotta, who has worked at the family orchard for 27 years. "It was a week later than last year, but there was nothing but constant sun." Mr. Bartolotta has had no problems with pollination. "Our bee man happened to be lucky," he said. "Wherever he has his bees over-winter, apparently the mites didn't attack." But as The Independent reported April 20, other New York growers may have been less fortunate because bee colonies have disappeared.

"As we enter a new growing season, there is anxiety that there will not be enough bees to pollinate the crop," New York Apple Association president Jim Allen says in a press release dated May 7. There are more than 7.4 million apple trees in the state, according to the Apple Association, and a mysterious disease known as colony collapse disorder (CCD) is believed to be responsible for killing off bee hives across the state this past winter. Senator Hillary Clinton has called on relevant committees in the U.S. Senate to address CCD and the honeybee decline in the upcoming Farm Bill and Agricultural Appropriations Bill.
"If these alarming trends are allowed to continue, they will place at risk in excess of $14 billion in annual United States farm output that depends on bee pollination," Senator Clinton wrote in a May 11, 2007 letter to the chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee. "Ultimately, the shortage of pollination services would impact the supply of healthful and affordable food for U.S. consumers."

Ms. Clinton's letter goes on to say that "some estimates have shown that nearly all the major beekeepers in the State of New York have lost more than 30% of their colonies to CCD," and that more than 90 different food, seed and fiber crops rely on bee pollination. Among those crops are alfalfa, apples, blueberries, cherries, plums, pumpkins, and squash. Some local growers import bees from out of state during the pollination season. Mr. Bartolotta said a beekeeper from Louisiana was on hand for the 24-hour window of opportunity here, when blossoms were viable at Klein's Kill. "He goes from almonds in California to blueberries down south, and then he follows the season up the eastern coastline until he gets to Maine," said Mr. Bartolotta.

Some Columbia County beekeepers have lost bee colonies, and others have not been affected. While researchers are investigating possible causes ranging from parasitic mites to microwave signals to genetic engineering, Victor Borghi of Miss Bee Haven Apiaries in East Chatham suspects inappropriate pesticide use. "It depends on the pesticide and who's using it," said Mr. Borghi. "Those people I've pollinated for who have a license to use pesticides, like apple orchards, have never had any problem. If people are using it randomly to spray on flowers, we get a kill."

Even if the crop is pollinated, growers face another problem, according to the Apple Association: labor shortages due to a lack of immigration policy in Washington. "We will wait and see what happens with the bees," association President Jim Allen says in the May 7 release. "In the meantime, we will be making a huge lobbying push this month in Washington, urging Congress to pass the AgJOBS bill, which will provide our farms with a reliable workforce." But local growers say they rely on the same workers year after year, some returning to the area from Mexico and others from Jamaica. "Most of the guys have been here 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 years," said Jake Samascott of Samascott Orchards in Kinderhook. "And most of the new guys are family members."

Bee Swarm Terrorizes Central Texas Neighborhood

(May 23, 2007)-A swarm of aggressive bees terrorized residents of the 2200 block of Morrow Avenue Wednesday afternoon in Waco. Some of those unlucky enough to be outdoors when the swarm attacked were stung, but there was no immediate information about whether any was seriously injured. About ten people were stung including two or three firefighters, said Jimmy Mauppin of the Waco Fire Department.

The bees swarmed as a beekeeper attempted to remove a hive. The beekeeper got about half of the bees, Mauppin said, and the rest formed an angry swarm. Firefighters were originally dispatched to the area in response to a report of an allergic reaction to a sting.

They requested assistance from Waco police, who were helping divert traffic away from the area Wednesday evening. The beekeeper, Mauppin said, told firefighters that the bees would settle down as night fell and temperatures cooled. He plans to return to the neighborhood Thursday morning to try to remove the rest of the bees. Officials are advising neighborhood residents to stay indoors, the curious to stay away, and motorists to keep their windows rolled up when driving through the area.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2007 -- As a precautionary measure, Del Monte Pet Products is voluntarily recalling select product codes of its pet treat products sold under the Jerky Treats®, Gravy Train® Beef Sticks and Pounce Meaty Morsels® brands as well as select dog snack and wet dog food products sold under private label brands. A complete list of affected brands and products is below.

The Company took this voluntary recall action immediately after learning this morning from the FDA that wheat gluten supplied to Del Monte Pet Products from a specific manufacturing facility in China contained melamine. Melamine is a substance not approved for use in food. The FDA made this finding as part of its ongoing investigation into the recent pet food recall.

The adulteration occurred in a limited production quantity on select product codes of the brands below. This recall removes all Del Monte pet products with wheat gluten procured from this manufacturing facility from retail shelves.

No other Del Monte Pet Products treats, biscuits or wet dog food products are impacted by this recall, and no Del Monte dry cat food, dry dog food, wet cat food or pouched pet foods are subject to this voluntary recall. The affected products comprise less than one-tenth of one percent of Del Monte Pet Products' annual pet food and pet treat production.

Del Monte Pet Products has proactively engaged and fully cooperated with the FDA since the start of its investigation. The adulterated ingredients were used in limited production over the last three months for those items identified by specific product codes. Del Monte Pet Products has not used wheat gluten from this manufacturing facility in China in any other pet products except those described below.

Consumers should discontinue feeding the products with the Product Codes detailed below to their pets.

• Spread your wealth around. Consumers can get their income tax refund faster with direct deposit. Take advantage of the new IRS Form 8888 and "spend some and save some". This form allows consumers to split their refund and electronically deposit their money in up to three accounts (savings, checking, and IRA are all eligible). You can deposit however much you like into each account.

• Repay existing debt. Use this money to pay off high interest credit cards, or to pay down car loans. The sooner these obligations are taken care of, the less interest you will pay on the money you borrowed.

• Open or add to your savings account for a rainy day. Nothing in this world is predictable, we all have unexpected spending that occurs each year, due to emergencies. It is wise to have an "emergency fund" and a good rule of thumb is to save enough to cover three to six months of living expenses. This may seem like a lot, but consumers can start saving a little at a time and build up their nest egg slowly. A healthy savings account prevents you from having to borrow money when emergencies happen.

• Invest your money. If you do not have much debt, and have disposable income, you should consider investing in an IRA, mutual funds, or stocks. The money you invest can increase over the years, and you can potentially end up creating a sizeable investment for your future.

Remember, gaining ground on your finances and reducing debt can be far more satisfying than unplanned purchases that may cause additional debt burdens. Experts Fear Other Planets May also Protest

August 24, 2006 - Minneapolis, Minnesota - (PRShredder.com) - In a carefully worded statement, an official spokesperson for the planet formerly known as "Earth" has publicly rejected it's legal given name and planet status, and from this date on wishes to be referred to as "Moon Buddy".

This new name will serve as both name and identification as a heavenly body. It seems that the former planet was so outraged that a member of it's planetary family would be rejected by "Specks of protoplasm that exist one day and are gone the next", that it decided to take steps to distance itself from the "human infestation" as much as possible.

When Moon Buddy was asked if it was planning any other forms of protest, it was not specific but replied, "Oh, I don't know. We may try to shake things up a bit and see who's paying attention. This issue is not over by any measure. If you insult one of us, you insult all of us."

When contacted for comment, Planet Mars appeared so angry that it was unable to speak. Venus coyly said "no comment". Jupiter seemed unfazed, amused, and would only say, "It's a knee-jerk response, they'll settle in their orbits in time. I have to admit we're all fond of Pluto and this recent news took us all by surprise. Pluto seems to holding up well so far, no talk about his leaving orbit or anything like that, so I'm sure it'll work out."

An official from NASA who declined to be named was despondent. "Christ, we're just getting started out there and what do they do? They take one of our stinking 9 planets away from us? Do you know what we will have to do after we finally visit all our planets? That's right, we'll have to have the technology to friggin go to ANOTHER solar system to explore more planets! Faster than light travel or Wormholes is what it's going to take, and who knows WHEN some egghead will figure THAT out! No one wants to visit a goddamn dwarf! What's the point???"

At press time we had not received statements or replies from the other planets we contacted.

Bees Attack Rescue Workers Freeing Trapped 16-Year-Old Girl From SUV

TRAPPED MARKLE GIRL - Three Ossian firefighters work to free a trapped 16-year-old Markle girl Tuesday afternoon on Wells County Road 1050N west of 200E as thousands of bees swarm out of a nest in the hollow bottom of the downed tree.

August 2, 2006 - Bees - thousands of them - swarmed and repeatedly stung rescue workers in rural Ossian Tuesday as they worked tirelessly to free a trapped Markle girl from a sports-utility vehicle after it crashed into a tree.

The impact knocked the tree down, but its hollow stump contained a large bees nest that once downed released thousands of angry bees or hornets that hovered around the crash and stung anyone around while slowing rescue efforts.

Seven Ossian firefighters, a woman who tried to help the injured motorist, and one Lutheran Air flight paramedic were taken to Bluffton and Fort Wayne hospitals because of multiple bee stings and/or heat-related injuries.

The driver of the SUV, Jacqueline R. Cossairt, 16, of 4350W U.S. 224, Markle, was injured in the crash and also stung several times. She was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne after being trapped in the vehicle for almost an hour. Ive never seen anything like this before and I hope I never see it again, said Ossian Fire Chief Kent Gilbert, the first firefighter to arrive at the accident. Ive encountered bees that have been mad before, but never in that quantity.

Gilbert was one of the firefighters taken to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne for a heat-related injury. Thirty to 50 bees stung Gilbert, mostly on his head. The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. as a heat wave blanketed Wells County and the temperature soared into the 90s with heat-index readings even higher. Cossairt was westbound on Wells County Road 1050N when she lost control of a brown 2002 GMC Envoy on the chip-and-seal road, according to Trooper Brian Walker of the Indiana State Police-Fort Wayne Post.

Police believe Cossairt over steered as she tried to correct and applied the SUVs brakes hard, which caused her to drive off the north side of County Road 1050N and strike the tree.

The collision knocked the tree down and spun her SUV around about 180 degrees before it stopped in the grass just west of a house at 1579E 1050N. The SUV stopped within about 15 feet of the downed tree.

The grinding impact pinned Cossairt inside the SUV and restricted her from moving, rescue workers said. Moments later, the bees emerged from their nest in the hollow tree trunk.
It was packed full of them, Walker said.

A woman police did not identify who reportedly lives at 1579E 1050N came out to help Cossairt but was stung repeatedly. She was stung so many times that she succumbed to the bee stings and they had to take her to the hospital, Walker said. Gilbert, who rushed to the accident from his home about 3 miles away, saw the swarm of bees as he pulled up to the accident. He drove past the downed tree, close to the house, to avoid the bees. As I pulled up, I saw the big swarm of bees, but I didnt realize how wide spread they were at that point, he said.

Gilbert jumped out of his truck and ran to check on Cossairt but was covered with bees by the time he reached her. She was also getting stung, he said. I was completely covered in bees and getting stung, he said. It was terrible. She was getting stung quite a bit in there, at least initially.

Gilbert reassured Cossairt that help was on the way as he ran back to his truck to alert rescue crews about the serious situation that was unfolding. (The bees) just started following me, he said. I ran clear back to my truck and was still covered in bees.

Gilbert quickly radioed emergency crews of the bee situation and the Bluffton Dispatch Center to say he had gotten stung multiple times. He also told rescuers to bring water to spray on the swarming bees.

The first fire pumper truck arrived moments later. Gilbert ran to the truck, put on his firefighter gear and he and other Ossian firefighters began to spray the bees and nest.
We had to knock the bees down before we could do anything, Gilbert said. Those bees were aggressive.

Firefighters also activated the foam system on their pumper and sprayed foam on the bees to weigh their wings down so they couldnt fly. They additionally used carbon dioxide to fight the bees. As soon as we got the water fog going over the top of it, it took the bees away from us, Gilbert said. The water was doing the best. There were so many bees that the carbon dioxide wasnt doing a whole lot.

Wells County EMS crews had to wait until firefighters began spraying the bees before they could approach the SUV. We had to stay back until it was safe because we are no good to anybody if we have multiple bee stings and we have an allergic reaction, said Andy Stimpson, a paramedic for Wells County EMS. Stimpson was stung eight to 10 times as he treated Cossairt inside the SUV for nearly 40 minutes.

Firefighters used the jaws of life to open the SUVs door and put rams inside to push the vehicle apart enough to free Cossairts legs, Gilbert said. Firefighters battling the bees were dressed in their heavy turnout gear in the sweltering heat to protect their legs, arms and faces as much as possible from the attacking bees. At 5 p.m., as rescuers still worked to free Cossairt from the SUV, emergency crews summoned Lutheran Air to the scene. The helicopter landed about seven minutes later in a field on the south side of County Road 1050N, but the bees soon started attacking the flight crew as they exited.

One flight paramedic who is allergic to bees was stung several times and had to be taken to Lutheran Hospital by Wells County EMS. His name was not available. Rescue crews continued working to free Cossairt and battle the stinging bees, but the heat began to take its toll on firefighters. We were tying to keep the bees away from us, so we had our air packs on and everything else to cover our faces, Gilbert said. We had more gear on than normal in higher than normal temperatures. I had guys just start dropping like flies.

Firefighters also faced another obstacle as the Ossian pumper and tanker began to run out of water. Gilbert called for a Uniondale tanker for additional water, but Ossians supply ran out before it arrived. I called for the Uniondale tanker because I knew we were going to run out of water, which we did, Gilbert said. Uniondale was there just a few minutes after we ran out of water and we started spraying water again. Shortly after that, we finally got her out of the car.

As crews freed Cossairt, the bees had started to migrate to the field where Lutheran Air had landed and were flying into the helicopter. The pilot flew the helicopter a short distance west of where it had been sitting and then moved it back as soon as rescuers were ready to load Cossairt.

Rescuers fought off bees as they carried Cossairt to the helicopter. Because the Lutheran Air paramedic was injured, Stimpson flew in his place to assist with the flight nurse. Cossairt suffered severe injuries to her legs from the knees down, facial injuries and multiple bee stings, Walker said. She was in stable condition late Tuesday night.

A spokesman from Lutheran Hospital said this morning that Cossairts condition was listed as fair. Police believe she was heading home at the time of the accident and said she was wearing a seat belt. Her vehicle was a total loss, Walker said.

In addition to Gilbert, six Ossian firefighters were taken to the hospital. Gilbert provided the following information about their injuries late Tuesday night. When reached at home early this morning, Gilbert said to the best of his knowledge all of the firefighters had been treated and released.

Darrell Reynolds, similar to Gilbert, was stung 30 to 50 times and also suffered a heat-related injury. He was treated at Lutheran Hospital.

Lee Dettmer, an assistant fire chief, had several bee stings and suffered heat exhaustion and dehydration. He was reported to still be weak this morning. He was treated at Lutheran Hospital.

Four Wells County EMS trucks responded to the scene.

Millions of young, healthy adults fell ill to the disease and died from the suffocation it caused. Experts now estimate that approximately 80 to 100 million people perished worldwide. The World Bank cites sources suggesting that a more virulent form (similar to the 1918-1919 strain) of pandemic flu may kill as many as 180-260 million in a worst-case scenario.
~ In preparing its Implementation Plan for the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza, the U.S. federal government assumes that 30% of the population ? 100 million ? would be infected, and that as many as 1.9 million would die ? greater than the total deaths caused in a single year by heart disease, cancers, strokes, chronic pulmonary disease, AIDS, and Alzheimer's Disease combined. One disease model projects that if the U.S. population (standing at 295 million at the time of the projection) is exposed to the H5N1 flu strain, 33% would be infected (97.3 million) with a resulting death rate of 0.58% (5.6 million deaths) ? more than twice the number of deaths from all the ten leading causes of death combined. So far, however, H5N1 has been 57% lethal in humans, meaning that in the very-worst case, possibly upwards of 50 million Americans may die.

In the best-case scenario: An H5N1 pandemic strikes but is no more lethal than seasonal influenza. Be mindful, however, that even this scenario has a sizeable death toll ? 200,000 to 1.5 million deaths worldwide and 36,000 in the U.S. alone. That's the "good news."

A nuclear bomb blast in a major city would not be as destructive as would be the estimated 11-12 million illegal aliens expected to grow to 30 million in a short number of years if amnesty is granted. Imagine what their voting power would be if granted citizenship in the USAand they vote in a block!

Granting amnesty to the illegal aliens will prove to be the greatest catastrophe ever to befall America. It will have our country make a fast slide into a Third World Status. We can see signs of the coming slide now. Illegal aliens are as suchILLEGAL and should be given no preference for citizenship. Politicians are the causes of the massive influx when they did little to close our Swiss cheese boarders or used their position of power to bring the present situation upon us.

Home Buyers and Sellers Find Wolves at Their Doors

Appleton, WI - May 15, 2006 - Beware of the wolf in sheeps clothing, promising to make home ownership dreams come true especially if youre strapped for cash or wishing to be charitable while also trimming your tax bill when selling a home. Mortgage fraud is on the rise, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), with reported cases quadrupling from 4,225 reported cases in 2001 to over 17,000 last year.

There are several tactics used when perpetrating home buyer and seller fraud. Common scams involve such characteristics as:

Creating an illusion that by using their services, you will receive a larger-than-average tax deduction.

Over-inflating housing prices and then offering kick-backs of cash;

Convincing you that you can afford a more expensive home than you really can, which increases property taxes, their commission, and the amount you need to borrow;

Addition of extra charges, credit insurance, encouragement to borrow more money, offers to refinance, or an interest-only payment structure with an often shocking balloon payment at the end (where you need to pay the entire original cost of the home at once or lose your home);

Presenting one loan structure when selling you the loan, but then substituting different, less than advantageous terms when signing;

Asking you to prepare a tax return showing higher income or fewer deductions than you really have. Dont do it!

According to Kevin C. Huston, enrolled agent with Blue Ridge Tax Advisors Inc. in Asheville, NC, "It is common for the ultimate mortgage-holder to request copies of the tax returns you filed with the IRS. If these numbers differ from the tax return you used when applying for a loan you could end up in jail for either mortgage fraud or for tax fraud. The mortgage-holder will have already been paid their commission, so don't expect them to defend you," added Huston.

Not only do these scams often put the buyers in over their head financially and cause many to later lose their homes, but one type of scam leads sellers to believe they will receive increased tax deductions because they worked through a charitable organization.

As an example, after selling her home, a Michigan woman, who intended to help a charity as well as her tax liability, was told by an organization claiming to be a tax-exempt charity that she would be delighted with the charitable tax deduction amount she would be able to claim when she filed her income tax return. The charitable-minded woman gave the buyer the down payment through the charity and planned to take a charitable deduction for the down payment amount. However, buried in her paperwork in fine print was a disclaimer saying the amount was not tax deductible but, rather, would only reduce the sales price.

While several charitable organizations are tax-exempt and legitimately help homebuyers through such helps as tax-excluded down-payment assistance, there are many fraudulent imitators that work to deceive by appearing as helpful, humble, and honest. The IRS is increasingly concerned with organizations that are taking advantage of homebuyers who need assistance for a down payment to realize the American dream of homeownership, said IRS Commissioner Mark W. Everson. So-called charities that manipulate the system do more than mislead honest homebuyers and ultimately jack up the cost of the home. They also damage the image of honest, legitimate charities.

If you are a prospective homebuyer considering using the services of a down-payment assistance program (where the down-payment amount is excluded from taxable income), or a home seller who would like to help the less-fortunate achieve the American dream of home ownership, check out the organization youre considering working with on www.irs.gov (click on Charities & Nonprofits, then Search for Charities) before going any further. Mortgage companies, refinancers, and home equity lenders, are among the guises used by fraud perpetrators. They often prey on the elderly, those with low-incomes, and good-hearted people who support charities. They promise to help you realize your dream, and say it may be your only chance of owning a home or gaining cash in a home equity situation (or helping others to do so). Instead of making dreams come true, they create nightmares. Dont fall for their bait. Do your research, make calls, and proceed cautiously.
